When I read Clannad (which I did before watching the anime) I had no problems understanding the translation. Don't let translation worries hold you back. People like to exaggerate when they say it's bad: it's really not that bad at all. The anime is ultimately an adaption of a visual novel. It's a very good adaption: unlike most VN adaptations, Clannad was successfully able to blend several "routes" from the VN into 1 cohesive story. However it's impossible to do this perfectly. Some things had to be changed from VN to anime to make it work. Perhaps some purists will argue against doing this, but I skipped certain routes the first time I read the VN. What was really important to me was the main story which lead to after story (Naigsa/Tomoya). So I skipped through the other routes (literally by holding control to skip through them) just to read that route and go to after story. is entirely worth it just for this route alone. If you really are unsure about committing time to the VN, I'd watch the first season only. It's kinda rough advice though, because Clannad is all about After Story, it's what makes it amazing. The first season does have some pretty meh moments (for instance Fuko is hit or miss, and a definite miss with me.
And they dedicate so many episodes to her right at the start but it had good moments too. It would be kinda interesting to watch the anime, then read the V.N. So if you can I highly recommend reading the V.N.
It doesn't detract from the story in any way and will really help. If you don't want to read then watch the anime. The anime is very good and a lot of people do not like VNs so it's the only way for them to experience Clannad.
